For your consideration, I have made a hooked Santa. He is hooked using lovely felted wools. I have added some twisty wool for accent. Also, a small piece of cedar. He is securely attached to a hornbook that I have painted black, and then barn red. I have distressed and antiqued for a nice primitive look. My picture is showing the barn red more brown.
